Assessments / Class Discussions:

Rather than taking quizzes, students will participate in Socratic Seminar-Fishbowl discussions of The Outsiders

• Character analysis will be a major focus given that this is the final essay topic.
• Students will be assigned to groups of 3 or 4 students to report out findings following discussions.
• Each student will participate in the inside circle at least 3 times (20 pts. ea. X 3 = 60 points)
• A different student from each group is responsible for posting their findings in the comments portion of a blog.
  • Each class has its own blog: 7th period and 1st period
  • Teacher will check out the mobile laptop lab the day following a fishbowl session.
  • (laptop dates are 4/16, 4/29, 5/5, 5/8, 5/14, 5/19, and 5/22)
  • A student posts when he/she is an outer circle participant.
  • Findings should include at least five observations that include elaboration.
  • Each student will post comments twice during the course of the novel reading. (20 pts. ea. X 2 = 40 points)

Final Essay

To prepare students for the final essay, they will work together in small groups on a collaborative "poster" which analyzes one character from the novel. Each group will draw to determine which character they will analyze together.
